Brain Power and Memory Tips
#1) Mental Math and other Brain Boosters
Before you can save anything in your memory, you must first fully concentrate on what you want to remember. Concentration places the information firmly into your short-term memory. From there, the details can be transferred to long-term memory. The next time you're sitting idle somewhere, help boost your concentration by playing mental brain games.

Examples: Count backward from 100 by 7's. Say the letters of the alphabet backward from z to a. Try to recall the capitals of as many U.S. states as you can. On a scrap of paper, write down as many words as you can think of that start with the letter "k" (or any other letter). Mental exercises like these help keep your brain sharp and your mind alert!

#2) Visualization & Association Technique
Visualization & Association may be the most powerful method of memorizing anything. But most people have never heard of or used it. (Although I hope to change that.) The idea is to convert the sound of the word you want to remember into a unique and memorable "mental image". Then, create a mental "scene" that includes that word-image plus related images that remind you of associated facts. When you need to recall the word or fact, think first of the image scene - which for almost everyone is far easier to remember than abstract information on its own.

#3) Memory Myth: Remembering too much can CLUTTER your mind
Your ability to remember things does not depend on how much information is in your mind. It depends on how well organized the information is. Scientists believe the human brain can store an almost unlimited amount of information. The more your learn about something, the easier it is to learn even more about it. Due to the many connections between the information, a subject expert has an easier time learning new facts about it that someone unfamiliar with the subject. So don't be shy or afraid of learning!

Samantha emerged from a coma to find her short-term memory damaged. Nevertheless, she has found ways to cope. Samantha has great advice for anyone afflicted with memory loss, including how she approaches new relationships.

#2) Use Video Games to Place Things in Order
Tom surprised me with his adaptation of the video game Call of Duty to the memory requirements for his job. He uses his knowledge of the levels of Call of Duty as "locations" for placing the information he wants to recall. What a clever way to implement the Journey/Loci Method of memorization!

#3) All Teeth Pulled, Affecting Memory?
Believe it or not, individuals who have lost all their teeth have worse memories! When Betty asked me about this, I was skeptical. But the scientific literature indicates that it may be true. Researchers in the Betula Project in the UK, for example, who studied over 2,000 people, said it plainly: "Those who keep a full set of teeth have better powers of memory than those that don't." So make sure to brush and floss every day!
